Blackboards in the Basque Country…Still the Best Way to Get the Message Across.
Just like café con leche, jamon, the beach, or local festivals, blackboards in the Basque Country are omnipresent. From small, traditional pintxo bars frequented only by locals to the ones haunted by tourists, they all have one thing in common.
Nearly every bar hangs a black chalkboard from the wall or ceiling, where daily specials and traditional offerings are displayed.
The blackboards allow bars to quickly change the menu so that patrons are shown the daily or seasonal pintxos depending on the ingredients available and specialty offerings. It is not only the best way for a bar to communicate with its customers on a busy evening when standing room is the only option, but also maintains the sense of tradition and culture displayed throughout the area.
